Lisa Malone

I graduated from University of Arkansas with a B.A. in English Literature and obtained my teaching certificate from Oklahoma State University.  After beginning my teaching career I received a Masters in Math and Science Education from the University of Tulsa.  My first year of teaching was as the English Department at Dustin High School, a very small school.  After taking many more science courses, I taught science for seven years at Byrd Middle School in Tulsa.  I then chose to teach for four years at the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, which allowed me to make up my own curriculum in a variety of courses such as Marine Biology, Astronomy,  Vertebrate Paleontology, Forensic Science, Science in Science Fiction Films, and the Science of Harry Potter.   At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, I began teaching science at the Union 8th Grade Center.  During the 2007-2008 school year I began teaching Marine Biology as a one semester elective and this changed to Medical Detectives during the 2014-2015 school year.

I sincerely believe that students learn science best through a hands-on curriculum, so expect a lot of labs and activities in my classes. Student interest and enjoyment is also key to student engagement in a subject - and I hope that my classes have their fun moments, though there will always be a purpose behind any activity or assignment. Fun aside, I feel a large part of my job is to get my students prepared for the academic challenges they will face in the future. Expect having to write in complete sentences as well as writing medical reports - that B.A. in English tends to influence me when I make my lesson plans. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email, if there is a question on an assignment or a class procedure. I sincerely welcome parent contact.
