Marina Nelson

My name is Marina Nelson and I teach Third Grade at Union’s Andersen Elementary School. I am originally from the Caribbean island of Barbados and I spent several of my formative years in Trinidad, another Caribbean island.  My early education was British-based and that has had a pronounced effect on my current teaching methodology.
After coming to America, I first attended Tulsa Community College where I obtained an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. Then, I matriculated at Northeastern State University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. Having an insatiable quest for knowledge, I went on to earn a Master’s Degree at the University of Oklahoma.
I have synthesized my British-based education with my American pedagogy using these disparate modes to form the foundation of my teaching style and it has served me in good stead.
My first years of teaching were honed within the Tulsa Public School system where I taught at the Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First grade levels. Then, hearing of the inimitable Union school system, I made a transition to Union, landing a position at Peters Elementary school, and it has absolutely lived up to its reputation. I thoroughly enjoy teaching at Peters. It is such a joy every day to see the light in the eyes of the children when they understand a concept being imparted to them.
I believe that children deserve respect and that a child’s self esteem should be nurtured tenderly. I believe that all children can succeed and I want them all to be motivated to learn and to enjoy the learning process. I really love children and I am truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to impart knowledge to these beautiful young minds.
