Connie Miller

It is a privilege to be able to share my passion for reading with students throughout the day. My entire teaching career of thirty seven years has been at Union. I began teaching first grade at Clark Elementary, and for the past twenty five years have been the Reading Specialist at Andersen Elementary. I received both my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, as well as my Master’s Degree with an emphasis in Reading Specialist Education, from Oklahoma State University. I achieved National Board Certification in 2006, in the area of Early/Middle Childhood: Literacy: Reading/Language Arts. I am also our Building Testing Coordinator. In 1989 and 2001, my colleagues honored me by selecting me Teacher of the Year.

My position, as a Reading Specialist, enables me to continually diagnose and formulate academic plans for students to achieve success in reading. This is an ongoing, daily process and relies on much insight concerning the academic, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of my students. It is also imperative to have technical knowledge of teaching strategies, resources, and learning styles. Since all students are unique, this plan is continually modified and adjusted and therefore challenges me daily as an educator. My favorite aspect of teaching is observing students become self confident readers and engaged in the learning process.
